Was war, was ist und was kommt

Hallihallo ihr Lieben :-)

ganz besonders in dieser seltsamen Zeit der physischen Distanzierung möchte ich euch doch über diese geniale Plattform des Internets auf dem Laufenden halten. Ich werde immer wieder gefragt, ob wir hier in Kanada auch etwas von Corona mitbekommen – Ja, auch hier ist der Corona-Virus angekommen… Im Folgenden ein bisschen was zu dem was bisher passiert ist, wie es aktuell aussieht und was die Zukunft so bringen mag:

WAS WAR

Seit dem letzten Eintrag haben sich ein paar Dinge verändert. Die Frühlingssaison hat wie eigentlich erwartet nicht die Arbeit mitgebracht, auf die wir uns alle hier gefreut hatten. Ein paar wenige Gruppen waren im Camp und haben die Programme wahrgenommen und dann hat Mitte März die Regierung Vorsichtsmaßnahmen wg der Coronaviren angekündigt. Die ersten Gruppen haben abgesagt und schlussendlich wurden alle möglichen nicht-essentiellen Aktivitäten in British Kolumbien untersagt. Dazu gehörten unter Anderem die Schulen, die nun schon seit vier Wochen geschlossen sind (begonnen hat das Ganze mit den Frühlingsferien). Schulklassen sind im Frühling (und Herbst) die Hauptgruppen, die hier im Camp zu Besuch sind. Aber auch alle weiteren Gruppen haben sich nach und nach nicht mehr weiter getroffen und können somit auch nicht zum Camp kommen. Camp Squeah hat sich dann einer Phase der ‚freiwilligen Selbst-Isolation‘ ausgesetzt. Bedeutet: Wir (nur die Mitarbeiter, die sowieso schon auf dem Gelände waren) halten uns hauptsächlich im Camp auf, gehen so gut wie gar nicht woanders hin und das Camp ist für alle weiteren Besucher und Gäste geschlossen!

Die Möglichkeit auf eine Wohnung, die ich im letzten Eintrag erwähnt hatte, hat sich leider (oder Gott sei Dank) kurz vor diesem ganzen Corona-Chaos erledigt gehabt. Auch wenn ich die Wohnung genial fand (nah am Camp, schönes Gelände, guter Preis, freundlicher Vermieter, …) und zuerst super enttäuscht war, sehe ich es mittlerweile als (mal wieder typische ;-)) Führung Gottes an. Keine Gruppen im Camp bedeutet keine Arbeit, und keine Arbeit bedeutet erstmal auf unbestimmte Zeit kein regelmäßiges Einkommen – die Miete hätten wir auf Dauer nur sehr schwer aufbringen können, wenn wir den Vertrag für die Wohnung unterschrieben hätten.

WAS IST

Nun sind wir zufrieden mit dem Ausgang der bisherigen Wohnungssuche und haben erstmal auf Pause gedrückt. Wir haben weiterhin die Erlaubnis in der Hütte zu wohnen, sind aber z.Zt. meistens im Camp und nutzen das Gelände und die Möglichkeiten dort. Wir haben z.B. Gemüse angepflanzt und hoffen dieses Jahr darauf unser eigenes Gemüse auch mal Essen zu können (die letzten Jahre sind wir immer kurz vor der Reife ausgereist und mussten unsere Pflanzen verschenken ;-)). Wir kochen und backen, ich spiele ab und an Klavier und wir sind viel draußen (bei dem gerade guten Wetter) zum Spazieren oder Kubb (Wikingerschach) spielen. Kevin hat zudem seine Jagdlizenz bestätigt bekommen und dadurch haben wir die Möglichkeit immer mal wieder Schießen zu gehen – es ist jedes Mal eine schöne Abwechslung. Das Schöne am Camp ist, dass wir nicht komplett von einer Gemeinschaft ausgeschlossen sind, sondern durch die CampCommunity eine Art Familie haben, mit der wir immer noch Zeit verbringen können. Diese besteht hauptsächlich aus der Familie Larson mit ihren 4 Jungs, Tom, Matthew, Donovan, Laryssa und Monica. Dustin und Jenna mit ihrem kleinen Rowan wohnen zwar auch auf dem Gelände, bleiben jedoch etwas auf Abstand, da Rowan erst ein paar Monate alt ist.

WAS KOMMT

Corona hält glaube ich die ganze Welt in Schach – an einigen Orten mehr, an anderen weniger. Wir haben es hier echt ganz gut. Doch auch wir wissen nicht konkret wie es weiter geht. Die Sommerfreizeiten im Camp stehen noch auf der Kippe und kaum einer glaubt wirklich daran, dass sie stattfinden (obwohl die Hoffnung da ist). Wir arbeiten trotzdem gerade daran unser Visum zu verlängern – denn unser Vertrag ist schließlich für die nächsten zwei Jahre verlängert worden und wir hoffen darauf, dass es spätestens im Herbst wieder mit ein paar Gruppen und Aktivitäten losgeht (man kann nur positiv denken…).

Das Wichtigste was bei uns in nächster Zeit ansteht ist jedoch kein ‚Was‘, sondern ein ‚Wer‘ :-) Wir freuen uns schon so sehr auf unseren kleinen Krümel. Es sind nur noch 5 Wochen bis zum errechneten Geburtstermin (5.Juni) und wir nutzen die kommenden Tage und Wochen, um uns so gut wie möglich auf unseren Schatz vorzubereiten: Ich habe noch ein paar Doktor-Termine (plus Ultraschall, um die aktuelle Liege-Position vom Krümel herauszufinden), wir wurden schon überschüttet mit Babykleidung und haben einen Autositz, plus Kinderwagen gekauft. Wir haben uns ein neues (und vielleicht etwas kindersichereres) Auto gekauft und ‚tauschen‘ es gerade gegen unseren Blaze aus (2003er BMW X5 - vier Türen, nicht so super laut und ein wenig neuer als unser robuster Chevy ;-)). Außerdem haben wir eine Babymatratze bestellt und Holz gekauft, um unserem Sohn eine eigene Babywiege zu bauen. Freunde von uns planen gerade eine ‚Soziale-Distanz-Babyparty‘ für den kleinen Mann – ich bin wirklich gespannt was das ergibt :D

Leider lassen sich einige Pläne nicht ganz so durchführen, wie erwartet: zum Beispiel kann uns z.Zt. keiner besuchen kommen. Unsere Familien hatten es geplant, jedoch sind die Pläne aufgrund gestrichener Flüge fürs Erste ins Wasser gefallen – wir hoffen, dass sie unseren Sohn nicht nur per Video & Skype kennen lernen, sondern sobald es geht die Möglichkeit bekommen ihn im Arm zu halten… Zudem wäre ich wirklich gerne mit Kevin oder auch ein paar Freundinnen mal so richtig ‚Babyshoppen‘ gegangen – naja, man kann nicht alles haben (und ich bin froh, dass wir noch so viele andere Möglichkeiten hatten und haben, um uns ausreichend auszustatten).

Ich freue mich schon darauf euch unser Krümelchen vorzustellen, aber jetzt höre ich erstmal auf euch von dieser Eltern-Vorbereitungszeit zu erzählen.

What was, what is and what is to come

Especially in these weird times of physical distancing, I want to use this great platform of the internet to inform you about what is happening in our lives. I get asked a lot if Canada is also noticing the effects of Covid – yes, Canada knows about the Corona Virus as well and has its regulations in place… The following talks about what happened so far, what is happening right now and what the future might bring:

WHAT WAS

Since the last entry a lot of things have changed. Spring season didn’t bring more work, but Covid19. We did have a couple of groups, but then the Corona Outbreak got more serious and Canadas government decided to close everything down mid-march. That also means schools are closed, and school groups are one of the most common groups coming to Camp Squeah in spring and fall. Everybody else got told to not meet in big groups anymore as well, and so Camp was pretty soon out of work. Camp Squeah then started a voluntary self-isolation phase, which means: We (only the staff already working here anyways) are mostly staying at Camp, don’t go out and Camp is closed to all other visitors or guests.

The possibility to rent out an apartment (I talked about that in my last entry), sadly (or Thanks to God) didn’t work out even before the whole Corona-Chaos started. And even though I loved that place (it was close to camp, a beautiful house for a good price and a friendly landlord, …) and I was really disappointed in the beginning, I now think it was (as always and typical ;-)) God’s doing. No groups at camp, means no work at camp, and no work means until finally some changes come, no paycheck – it would have been hard for us renting a place, if we’d signed the contract before COVID started.

WHAT IS

Right now we're happy about the outcome of our search for a new apartment and are taking a break. We are still allowed to live in the cabin, but also live in one of the rooms of camp at the moment, where we can use the surroundings and possibilities. For example: we planted some vegetables and hope that this year we're actually able to eat what we planted (in the last years, we always planted, but shortly before the time came to harvest, we traveled out of country and had to give away our plants ;-)). We have the time to cook and bake, I play the piano every now and then and we're outside a lot (especially when the sun is shining) to go for a walk or play Kubb. Kevin also got his hunting license and we now have the possibility to go shooting at times - which is always a nice change in scenery. The good thing about Camp is that we're not totally alone all the time, but have a kind of 'family' in the camp community that we can spend time with. The people we're surrounded by are mostly the Larson Family with their four boys, Tom, Matthew, Donovan, Laryssa and Monica. Dustin and Jenna with their tiny baby Rowan live at camp as well, but are keeping their distance, because Rowan is still very young and they don't want to risk exposing him too much. 

WHAT IS TO COME

I know that Corona is influencing the whole world at the moment - some places more and some others less. We can say that we're very lucky living where we are. But we still don't really have an idea what is to come. Summercamp is still getting prepared, but nobody really knows if it's gonna happen (we're hopeful, but also don't really think it will). We're still working on extending our visa though - our work contract got extended and we're hoping that latest in fall, work gets picked up again with a few groups and activities (one can only hope and think positive...).

The most important thing happening in our future isn't a 'what' though, but a 'who' :-) We are so looking forward to having our baby son. It's only 5 more weeks until my due date (5th of June) and we're using the upcoming days and weeks to prepare ourselves as best as possible for our tiny treasure: I have a couple of doctors appointments to attend (plus ultrasound, to see what position he's in), we got lots of baby clothes and bought a stroller and infant car seat. We also bought a new (and maybe a little more babysafe) car and am (sadly and happily) switching it for our Blaze (it's a 2003 BMW X5 - four doors, not as loud and a bit newer than our robust and reliable Chevy;-)). On top of that we ordered a baby mattress and bought some wood, to build our son his own baby crib. Friends of ours are planing a 'Social-Distance-babyparty' for our little one - and I am very excited to see how that works out :D

Some plans are sadly not working out as well as we thought they would: no one can visit us at the moment. Our families planned on coming, but their flights got cancelled by the airlines - we hope that that changes soon enough, so they won't only meet our new family member over video & Skype. I also really wanted to go baby shopping with Kevin or a couple of friends - but well, we can't have everything, can we (and I'm really glad there were and are so many other options to get the things we need for our baby). 

I'm so excited to tell you more about our Krümelchen, but right now I'm gonna stop writing about this parent-prepping.
